Byrom
Street Byrom Street runs along the front of St. John's Gardens. The street is named after the Byrom Family who were the original owners of much of the land in that area. It was Edward Byrom who built St. John's Church, that once stood where the gardens are today. He also built a quay on the River Irwell at the end of what is now Quay Street. Facing the park are a number of late 18th Century houses with gothic door frames.
Further down the street, closer
to Quay Street, you will find Artillery House, 15 Byrom Street,
which sits on the corner of Artillery Street.
The building is home to Hague
Lambert Solicitors. There is a blue plaque on the wall close to
the corner with Artillery Street.
The plaque reveals the reason why
the street is called Artillery Street.
