As you can see from these early images of Piccadilly, it has always been an important bus station.  Buses serving much of Greater Manchester stopped on both sides of the gardens and bus shelters were to be found in both areas.

Today, Piccadilly is a transportation interchange with both buses and the Metrolink trams stopping in Parker Street between the gardens and Piccadilly Exchange.
