Explore Typography and History in the City!

MCR Type Project has been inspired by the multiplicity and diversity of typefaces which can be found in cities. This project aims to create a guide to the history and typography in the City of Manchester locating various sites on a map of the city centre.

Using genuine Manchester characters found on the streets I have created this unique alphabet and I am introducing viewers to the incredible world of letterforms.  It is hoped this will stimulate interest in the phenomenon of Typography in Manchester, and the project could be broadened across other cities and countries in the future.

As the project is inspired by the typography which accompanies people for centuries in their every day lives, a history of the buildings where particular characters were found is an integral part of the project.

All materials were printed on paper which was made in Greater Manchester Area — Fletcher's Paper Mill; Ringley Village/ Farnworth, Lancashire. Shut down in 2002 now is demolished.
I am a Graphic Designer with a First Class honours degree in Fine Arts & Graphic Design from the University of Silesia in Poland. I have completed an MA in Design in the DesignLAB.My primary focus is on the communication of complex subject matter in visually effective ways.  I take a particular interest in typography and graphic design for publications.

I believe that it is the purpose of graphic design to communicate complex ideas effectively. During the MA I have also worked with a dentist to create visual aids to assist patients with learning disabilities to articulate the intensity and location of the pain they are suffering.

I have also contributed the graphic design to a collaborative project with fellow MA student, Geoff Hall. This project has been centred on producing the first in a potential series of books, titled "British Stuff – Life in Britain in 101 everyday objects”. A sampler edition of this book is included in the show. The book is currently under active consideration by an international publisher.

The next stage of my learning will be best facilitated by a program/ project/internship, which offers a diverse learning experience.
