The Media City Footbridge

In October of 2010 the almost complete Media City Footbridge is seen above in its open position.  A year ago, almost to the day, I took the images below of the contractors sinking a metal frame into the canal.  It was to become the pivot point for the new bridge.

When complete, the new bridge will connect The Imperial War Museum and Irwell River Park to MediaCityUK.  A new wharf has been created adjacent to the War Museum to provide an improved footpath along the canal.

The new bridge is a project of the Northwest Regional Development Agency.  Their web site says this about it, "The £11m bridge, funded by the NWDA, will be a spectacular addition to the Salford Quays skyline and will provide better access and encourage extra footfall around Trafford Wharf and through to Trafford Park, the Lowry, MediaCityUK, Imperial War Museum North and Old Trafford football and cricket grounds."

Steven Broomhead, Chief Executive of the NWDA, said: “The bridge not only looks spectacular but it will be an important channel for improving access and connectivity to MediaCityUK and across the Quays.”

The bridge has been engineered by Balfour Beatty and it took four days to move into position .  In October of 2010 the finishing touches are being added to the bridge and work continues on the approaches.  It will be ready and open to the public in 2011.
