A Virtual Tour of Plymouth Grove School - May 2000

Note the trees shown in the picture taken in the early 90s are now gone. The building on the left edge of the picture is a block of outside toilets - take it from me they look a lot nicer than the ones that used to be at the back of the school.

The front of the school. A favourite location for class pictures in the 1950s. The windows have been installed since then as part of the reconstruction of the inside which also saw the ground-floor hall replaced with a classroom space. The memorial stone is rather worn at the bottom but by scanning it at 1200 dpi it would appear to say that it was laid in July of 1905.

The swinging gate that we used in the 50s is still in place today.

Left: the west side of the school which was the Boys entrance in the 50s. Notice that the extension on the side of the building, which in my day was up on concrete stilts, is now closed in and presumably used for storage.

Right: the eastern side of the school with the tower of St. Joseph's in the distance. This extensive shale play area was the location in the 50s of our kitchen and "dining room" - although dining was a rather euphemistic description of what went on in there.

The play area at the rear of the school. It includes an innovative nature walkway through the trees along the margins of the area. There were houses here in the 50s. I would think that these trees were once growing in the gardens of those houses.
