St. John's Church of England School
The original
school occupied a site close to St. John's Church.
However, it was damaged by a number of fires in 1986 and 1987. The school was rebuilt and re-opened in 1990. Today, It is situated on Birch Lane about a mile south of Manchester city centre in an area of older terraced housing bordered by newer local authority housing, largely for rent. Over 80 per
cent of the school's intake is Muslim, most of whom are Pakistani or
Bangladeshi in origin. In addition, there is a significant minority of
Afro-Caribbean heritage. The new school was designed with a standard
admissions number of 45 and included a 45-place nursery. There are
currently 319 pupils on roll, plus 45 in the nursery. There are 270
pupils who come from homes where English is not the first language. Below: Class Photograph circa 1957 -
